What is a DOI (Digital Object Identifier)?
DOI is a digital identifier of an intellectual property object that is placed on the Internet. DOI can be assigned to scientific collections, journals, monographs and textbooks, as well as to individual articles, papers, chapters of a scientific book, etc. It is a kind of serial number used for permanent and unique identification.
A DOI contains various information: the article/paper's Internet address (URL), the title of the article/paper, information about its author(s), publication information, and other metadata.
A DOI consists of a prefix and a suffix.
The DOI prefix is the unique identifier of the publisher. The publisher can obtain it only from specialized agencies whose activities are coordinated by the IDF (International DOI Foundation). For example, the our prefix looks like this: 10.36074.
The DOI suffix is a direct identifier of a specific object (in our case - an article), which consists of numbers and/or letters, signs and is always unique and unrepeatable. The DOI is usually indicated on the source page of the publication as 10.36074/logos-18.08.2023.01 or as a link https://doi.org/10.36074/logos-18.08.2023.01.
Why do you need a DOI?
First of all, the presence of a DOI is a guarantee of the preservation of scientific publications in the network. The archive of DOI-assigned materials is constantly maintained and updated. A system of distributed archival storage of published material is very often used, for example with the help of LOCKSS and CLOCKSS. That is, the article or issue will not «disappear» from the archive of the publisher's website over time.
Another advantage is the recognition and universality of the use of DOI, because it is used by the vast majority of respected scientific publishing houses in the world. Assigning a DOI has a positive effect on the reputation of the author, because with the help of the identifier, materials can be indexed in the world's leading scientific bibliographic catalogs.
A publication that has a DOI is much easier to cite and include in the bibliography: different styles of reference design or even an error in the design of the citation will not be a problem if the DOI is correctly indicated. In addition, the DOI guarantees the reliability of the source of the citation, because it always allows you to go to the publication and check the citation or other borrowed information.
Thus, by assigning a DOI to your article, you get:
■ guarantee of permanent access to the published work;
■ backup metadata of published work in СrossRef, WorldCat, etc.;
■ the possibility of increasing the number of citations of the published work;
■ recognition by the world community of scientists and scientific publishers.
